Gravelly Point Park

On my dear friend Sarah’s birthday we decided to have a little picnic at Gravelly Point Park. This park is amazing for quite a few reasons: 1. It is a wide open space along the Potomac River 2. It has a wonderful view of the monuments 3. It is right next to DCA airport. Do you see the plane coming into land in the photo above? It is incredible to sit under the planes as they are heading for landing. The first plane is a bit disorienting because you feel like it’s going to land on top of you. Actually I felt that way every single plane, but it’s a great little adrenaline rush. I think this park is one of Washington DC’s best kept secrets.

And then we asked a random guy playing frisbee at the park to take our photo with the planes. WEBgravelly-166WEBgravelly

What a lovely evening with friends, celebrating the life of Sarah. We might have went to Shake Shack after the sun set. Can never have enough Shake Shack right?

  1. As Gravelly Point is 3 minutes from my house, I know it well. Years ago when I worked for Congress, we played softball there. However, we only did it once as the ground is pretty rough. This whole area is a landfill site (dump lands) and built over former wetlands, as is most of the land around National Airport. Nice photos of the airport and sky on a clear day.

    • Wow, that’s interesting! I suppose the wind from water and the airplanes probably didn’t help softball either, huh? I love fellow Washingtonians. Thanks for visiting!
