A Day in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

The ENFP in me loved the fact that we had no real plans heading up to New York over Labor Day weekend. If you are a very Type-A person I am sorry if this next sentence makes you shudder: We didn’t decide whether we would bus, train, or drive until the night before we left and due to the nature of the hotel credits we had, didn’t book a hotel until the day of. It was refreshing.

Keeping with that ‘go with the flow’  style, we made plans as we went. After spending a glorious afternoon strolling through Central Park , we woke up in the morning ready to commute over to Brooklyn. We met Jason & Emily  for brunch at a really cool spot in Williamsburg called Egg and it was everything I could have hoped for a Williamsburg brunch spot. White walls, lots of french pressed coffee, tattoo-ed patrons, grassfed everything, ridiculously good food.  You get the idea.

And here’s a quick photo I snapped of the restaurant in all its hipster glory as we walked away. I should have taken more photos, but I was too busy enjoying the company and the food.

When we arrived in Williamsburg we were greeted with this lovely underground concert at the Bedford Ave. station. A great way to be welcomed into hipster-Mecca.

We spent the rest of the morning wandering through stores and flea markets like Brooklyn Flea, Artists & Fleas, Junk, to name a few. It did my heart good.

Then we decided to head over to Mast Brothers Chocolate to partake in the best chocolate cookie I’ve ever had.

I mean, that packaging. I think they should make it into wallpaper. I really loved it.

We also tried some Brewed Chocolate that was made similarly to tea. It was unlike anything I’ve had before so it’s hard to describe the flavor profile to you, but it was pretty good. Definitely a good experience.

After wandering around for the day and dodging a massive rain storm in a small cafe for a while, we found ourselves along the coastline (riverside? what do you call it?) admiring the New York skyline.

During this walk we happened upon Odd Fellows Ice Cream. Also a winner. This city sure knows how to make some good food. Right after we got back I saw this feature about them and loved learning more about the company.

We took our ice cream with us to watch the sunset over the skyline. This sounds pretty romantic, and it was, but I’ll be real. Our ice cream was melting all over us after making very poor ice-cream-to-napkin ratio decisions and the rain storm left every sit-able surface wet. So we mostly stood there with very sticky hands. We still had a good time though. Man, do I love doing life with Dave Baker.

The empire state building was lit up Red, White, and Blue for the holiday weekend.

Such a great weekend in NYC. My only big regret is not taking any photos with PEOPLE in them. We had a lot of fun with great friends and you would never know from these photos. I will console myself with the fact that perhaps I was too enthralled with conversations and friendships to remember my camera. However, here are a few iphone photos and snapshots that we did manage. (Shelly – we will have to take 30 photos next time we are together to make up for all of the photos we never take, k?)

  1. I totally agree about that beautiful chocolate packaging at Mast Brothers- I’d definitely want to visit that spot if I ever do make it back to NYC. I’ve never tried brewed chocolate either but I think someone should have thought of that sooner!
